Wrestling is one of Higley’s more underappreciated sports. The dedicated and passionate wrestlers on the team took part in one of the best wrestling seasons that Coach Baker, the head coach of the team, has seen in his four years at Higley. This varsity wrestling team ended the season with a 20-17, wins to losses, making them fourth in the section.

The JV wrestling knights went undefeated in their season. “The team chemistry was great, the seniors welcomed the freshmen to the team and everyone became very close,” said Coach Baker when asked about the team bond.

This season the team had the opportunity to travel for multiple tournaments out of state, such as Utah and Nevada. Baker stated, “I had a lot of fun traveling with the boys [and] going up to Utah. It’s something we’ve never done before.” His fondest memory of the season was when the team saw Star Wars: The Last Jedi on opening day in Utah as a team bonding activity.

Although Higley’s wrestling program is on the smaller side, the varsity team qualified six wrestlers to wrestle in the state competition: David Goodman, Jacob Taylor, Brandon Guzman, Justin Vargas, Jonah Villegas, and Jackson Solomon.

When asked about their performance, Baker said, “The boys performed well. The team is on the climb.” Not only did the team have a strong season, but they are expected to have a great offseason wrestling in the Folkstyle, Freestyle, and Greco Roman wrestling tournaments.

Higley’s wrestling team will be a team to watch over the next few years. “We are only going to get better,” Baker stated. New wrestlers are encouraged to come to the practices and join the team.
