Video game competitions are seen as something for adolescents and not anything to care about, however this is not completely true. Video game competitions have the same amount of excitement as most other sports. Some would even say that it could be considered a sport, many prefer to call it eSports.

Not all video games are considered to be part of eSports, some the main games are Dota 2, Overwatch, CS:GO(Counter Strike Global Offensive),Super Smash Bros. 4 (or Smash 4) and League of Legends. All of these games except Smash 4 are team games that often involve between 5-6 players on each team, and their objectives are somewhat similar. For Dota 2 and League of Legends each team has to destroy the enemy base, for Overwatch its attack and defend control points. League of Legends has been one of the longest game, to have worldwide championships, they began in 2010, when the game got first fully released.

Often these competitions are watched on the streaming service, Twitch.tv, but they are also can be watched in person. There are competitions held worldwide, one of the greatest achievements for these competitions was in 2013 the League of Legends Season 3 World Championship Final, sold out the Staples Center.

In more recent years, there have been sport teams that sponsor some of the teams that play in these tournaments. In the 2018 Spring season the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets have sponsored the teams Golden Guardians and Clutch Gaming, respectively. Another team, Echo Fox, has been in the NA LCS for two years now, it was founded by Rick Fox an ex-Pro Basketball player. Colleges have also participated in creating competitive League of Legends and Overwatch teams and having nationwide competitions.

The best part of watching these competitions is that you can connect with people around the world. This is similar to watching sports in the olympics, like the winter olympics that happened earlier this year. It has been rumored that in the next summer olympics ,held in Japan in 2020, there is a chance video games will be an event; as well as the following summer olympics, which will be held in Paris in 2024.

Furthermore, many of the players who compete aren’t just people who play the game for only a short amount of time. Most of the games have a ranking system that the players have to climb to the highest rank to be chosen by teams. For League of Legends they are at least the top 0.07% of players. With more games coming out with ranking systems it allows them to create teams for eSports, one game that is beginning to enter the eSport scene is Fortnite.

Competitive video games should be seen a spectator sport and not as something that is seen as for nerds. Also people now a days now can have their dream job in the future. As well as people shouldn’t be afraid of talking about their interests, because there are properly more people who have the same interest.
